Active immunity is stimulated by infection.  The reaction to a first exposure is the primary immune response.  The presence of memory cells allows the response to subsequent exposures to be rapid and powerful; this reaction is the secondary immune response.  Vaccines take advantage of this by stimulating the primary immune response without causing disease.
